Luke 6.27-38
Jesus challenges our way of thinking, our very values. And he continues this challenge in today’s Gospel. If last week’s challenge was about how we think, this week’s challenge is about how we act. So today, I want to look at how we act, focusing particularly on three aspects: love in action, mercy and forgiveness, and lastly, extravagant generosity.

The Baptism of our Lord
Like our New Year, here today in January 2022, Jesus’ baptism marks a new beginning. It became the prelude to a three year ministry that changed the world. And interestingly in Luke’s Gospel, the text today is as much about John the Baptist as it is about Jesus. It led me to think about the many roles that we can all play in preparing people to meet Jesus.

Advent 1
In today’s modern world, the focus in this time, tends to be on Jesus’ birth, but Advent also has a deeper meaning, a meaning that is mysteriously tied up with the concept of time, and that is, the preparation for Jesus’ second coming.

Esther
As I considered the texts for this week I couldn’t get past the reading from Esther. It’s the only time in our three year lectionary cycle that we get a portion from this unique Old Testament book and, read in isolation, it doesn’t make much sense. So I thought it would be fun to have a look at the whole book of Esther and try to find some meaning and application to our volatile and uncertain world today. I also have a confession to make. I have always considered myself something of a feminist and the book of Esther introduces Queen Vashti in its first chapter who some commentators consider is the world’s first documented feminist! So do find a bible and let’s together have a look at the Book of Esther.

John Chapter 6
"It’s quite possibly the most famous and infamous section of John’s Gospel. It has something for everyone. If you like drama, it has miracles; if you like narrative, it has the story of Jesus’ ministry in his homeland in northern Galilee, if you like theology, chapter six gives us Jesus’ Bread of Life reflection."
"Explore the idea of God's presence, particularly as it comes in the form of Jesus."
Jesus says “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
"How many of you have struggled with belief and unbelief? Particularly when the world around us, seems so arbitrary, when the actions of those in power seem pointless or unhelpful."
