The Anglican Parish of Lara with Little River
Early History
The Anglican Parish of Lara with Little River has two centres both with the You Yangs, the distinctive granite peaks which rise from the flat volcanic plains between Melbourne and Geelong, as a back drop.
Holy Trinity Lara is situated in the township of Lara on the outskirts of Geelong. Subdivisions for the township started in the 1850s and in 1877 the original church was opened and then consecrated by Bishop Moorehouse in 1882. The site of Holy Trinity was the largest Corroboree ground for the Wathaurung people in Victoria (1). The orginal bluestone church and hall was destroyed by the 1969 Lara bushfires and rebuilt following substantial fundraising in 1971 and consecrated on September 3rd 1971 by Archbishop Frank Woods. On the 26th August 2013, Bishop Philip Huggins opened the new purpose built Op Shop and Food Relief building.
Christ Church Little River is situated between Werribee and Lara also on the Geelong - Melbourne trainline. The original Church of England for the district was St James Wurdi You Yangs built in the 1850s at the foot of the You Yangs. As the townships of Little River and Lara grew, St James became remote to the populations that it was initially built to serve. The congregation decided to move the church to the current Little River site on Rothwell Road. The bluestone was carted from the You Yangs to Little River and Christ Church was rebuilt and consecrated on December 22nd 1893.

The annual reports contained on this page document our history in more recent times. In 2011, the two Vestries were combined and reported on together.
