Supporting Seafarers on the frontline of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has put seafarers around the world in precarious situations.
Seafarers have shouldered a heavy burden during the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining global trade and keeping our economies moving by delivering the vital supplies. However, it has come at a personal cost to the seafarers who have spent longer on-board ships, unable to take shore leave due to mandatory quarantine and separated from their friends and families.
Travel restrictions mean some cannot leave their ships, be repatriated home, or even get urgent medical assistance. Other seafarers have seen their contracts unilaterally terminated or have been quarantined on board ships for more than 14 days, without getting paid.
In December 2020, it was estimated that 400,000 seafarers were stranded on ships beyond the end of their original contracts and unable to be repatriated, due to COVID-related travel restrictions
The Anglican Mission to Seafarers in North Shore, led by Rev Noah Park, has been working hard to help. As Seafarers are not allowed to disembark due to Covid restrictions, he takes donations to them and passes over to the ships, in Covid-safe conditions, a wide range of goods, such as toiletries, beanies, phone cards and magazines.
Holy Trinity has been supporting this effort through the Op Shop and are now asking for further support. There will be a box for donations in the Hall for magazines, which will be delivered to Rev Noah weekly. As seafarers operate in a wide range of languages, pictures are important, but any interest area will be welcomed, from women’s magazines to car mechanics and National Geographic.
